Helping South Florida veterans at home

We modify homes for veterans in Fort Lauderdale, Davie, Lighthouse Point, Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, Miami Beach and communities across Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach Counties.

If you receive care through the Miami VA Healthcare System, including its William “Bill” Kling outpatient clinic in Broward, or the West Palm Beach VA Healthcare System, your VA health care team is where a HISA request begins. We work alongside that process: we price the work your provider recommends and build it once it’s approved.

10 ways we make a home wheelchair accessible

Whether you use a wheelchair, have limited mobility or plan to age in place, these are the upgrades we build most often. Many can be covered by HISA, SAH or SHA funds.

  1. 1

    Ramps and lifts

Ramps take care of steps, curbs and porches. Where there are too many steps for a ramp, a wheelchair or stair lift does the job at the push of a button.

  2. 2

    Wider doorways

Most interior doors are 23 to 30 inches wide, too narrow for most wheelchairs. Offset hinges or new frames open them up.

At least 32 inches; 36 inches is ideal

  3. 3

    Lower countertops

Kitchen and bathroom counters set at a comfortable seated height make everyday tasks possible again.

About 28 to 34 inches high

  4. 4

Open space under sinks and counters

Roll-under space lets you pull right up to a sink or work surface. We measure from the floor to the top of your armrests and add room to spare.

Your armrest height plus at least 2 inches

  5. 5

    Accessible appliances

We plan around appliances you can reach and use: side-by-side refrigerators, a microwave built into lower cabinets and a front-load washer and dryer.

  6. 6

    Easy-grip door hardware

Lever handles and push-pull bars replace round knobs. Automatic doors can open with a wall button or switch.

  7. 7

    Grab bars

Grab bars by the toilet, in the shower and next to the bed, anchored into the wall studs so they safely hold your full weight.

  8. 8

    Roll-in showers and shower benches

A curbless roll-in shower with a fold-down bench, properly reinforced, or a full accessible wet room.

  9. 9

    Lighting and switches

Light switches and controls moved within reach, and lighting adjusted to cut glare from a seated position.

Switches about 36 inches from the floor

  10. 10

    Smooth outdoor surfaces

Firm, slip-resistant paths and patios in concrete, pavers or decking replace grass and loose gravel, so you can enjoy your yard.

Veterans’ questions, answered

What is the VA HISA grant?

HISA (Home Improvements and Structural Alterations) is a VA benefit that pays for medically necessary changes to a veteran’s primary home, such as ramps, wider doorways, roll-in showers and lowered counters. It is available whether you own or rent.

How much can I get from HISA, SAH or SHA?

HISA pays up to $6,800 over your lifetime for service-connected needs, or up to $2,000 otherwise. For fiscal year 2026, SAH grants go up to $126,526 and SHA grants up to $25,350. The VA sets these amounts and updates them each year.

Do I need to own my home?

Not for HISA, which covers homes you rent as well as homes you own. SAH requires that you own or will own the home. SHA can also be used in a home owned by a family member you live with.

Can you apply for the grant for me?

Reach out to us first and we’ll walk you through the process step by step. We help you get ready: we explain which grant fits, give you a written scope and estimate, and answer questions along the way.

Is the consultation really free?

Yes. Every veteran gets a complimentary consultation. We come to your home, listen to what is hard day to day and recommend what to do first, with no obligation.

Which areas do you serve?

We serve veterans across Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach Counties, including Fort Lauderdale, Davie, Lighthouse Point, Lauderdale-By-The-Sea and Miami Beach. Call or text 954-650-2009 or email veterans@southernconstrux.com.

Not sure where to start?

Start with the changes that make the biggest difference to daily life. For most veterans that means getting in and out of the house safely with a ramp or lift, and moving freely inside with wider doorways and clear paths. In a two-story home, a stair lift usually comes next.

We’ll walk your home with you, recommend what to do first and price it out, at no cost to you.
